Perhaps the most personal building in the Birmingham Development portfolio is historic landmark Jack’s, at 615 Sacramento Street. For decades, Jack’s was one of the Birmingham’s and Cynthia’s father’s all-time favorite restaurants. Rob and Cynthia even named their son Jack! The original restaurant closed just three days after their daughter Alanna was born, which did not prevent Cynthia’s father “Poppa Jack” from attending closing night. In a happy turn of events, Birmingham Development purchased the building in 2018. The family has since collected menus, photographs, ashtrays and other artifacts to preserve the space.
The three-story brick building features an elegant skylight and a banister replicating the one in the Crillon Hotel, Paris. Ornamental plaster cast moldings, restored by Lorna Kollmeyer, decorate walls throughout the building. 615 Sacramento is 6,700 square feet and is located in the Financial District just steps away from the Transamerica Pyramid.
The original Jack’s opened in 1864, the year President Lincoln was reelected, and thrived as the city’s second-oldest restaurant until its closure in 1996. It was the site of countless significant gatherings. Some notable patrons included Ernest Hemingway, Ingrid Bergman, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Herb Caen and Lawrence Lurie. Alfred Hitchcock was a regular, and according to local legend, invented the mimosa cocktail at Jack’s.
The subterranean and ground levels have large storage spaces and a fully equipped restaurant kitchen.
In 2025, the ground floor and mezzanine were thoughtfully reimagined in collaboration with the cultural hospitality operator & venue development firm Skylight, which currently operates Jack's as a cultural salon and private event space.
